A friend in need is a friend indeed
When you are sad because of various reasons, that person who comes close to you and gives you comfort and tells you a pleasant and encouraging word is your friend.
Also, when you have some nice accomplishment, when won a prize, when you get good results, the first person who congratulates you and is happy for you (except your parents, of course) is your friend.
Do not make confusion between true friendship feeling and flattery. The person who comes and praises your aspect, your clothes, your expensive cell phone, your nice shoes, is not your friend. It's only someone who needs something from you.
The English saying "A friend in need is a friend indeed" was said - for sure - by someone who confronted real problems in life and couldn't find a shoulder to lay his/her troubles on...
